  Distribution:Four species of true jungle fowl exist in Indo-Malayan sub-region of which three occur in Indian subcontinent, the fourth, G. varmis inhabits Java and neighbouring islands. Red Jungle fowl inhabits foothills of Himalayas, Kashmir, some parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal and banks of Godavari River.  
 
 
  Habits:They remain in small groups, usually a cock and 3 to 4 hens. They come out in the early morning and late afternoon in search of food.  
 
 
  Diedt in the Wild:Gallus gallus is an herbivore and insectivore. Red jungle fowls eat corn, soybean, worms, grass, and different kinds of grains found on the ground. They cannot detect sweet tastes. They can detect salt, but most red jungle fowl do not like it.

  Animal in Captivity at NZP:There are about 38 birds (16:22) in NZP. They are all captive bred. The founder pairs were obtained from Himanchal Pradesh in the ratio of 3:3. One pair was received from Chail pheasantry on 30.07.2000, and the second from Kufri Zoo (Male on 30.07.2000 and female on 27.03.2001), and third from Rajbhawan pheasantry (Male on 30.07.2000 and female on 27.03.2001), Shimla. The birds adopted very well in the captive conditions. As a result of this they are breeding successfully.

The detail of each individual can not be given as they are not marked or identified. However they are of the age from 1 year to 4 years.
 
 
  Animal in Wild:Status not known.  
 
 
  Threats:This is a game bird and therefore poaching can not be ruled out. The habitat degradation is the another cause of their decline.
