  Status:According to Schaller (1967) in 1965 the population was between 1400 and 1800 in India and about 1600 in Nepal. In 1980 the population of swamp deer was 2000 (Dudhwa National Park, Uttar Pradesh) and in 1995 the population was 4168 (both species).  
 
 
  Distribution:North of Ganga from Uttar Pradesh to Assam and south of Ganga principally in Madhya Pradesh. Two races are recognized: the swamp – dwelling duvauceli of the Terai, U.P., Assam, and the Sunderbans. Species found in Madhya Pradesh is distinguished by its splayed hooves and lager skull and is known as branderi. They thrive on hard open ground.  
 
 
  Habits:They feed in the mornings and in the evenings. They are less nocturnal than the Sambar deer. When alarmed they give out a shrill baying alarm call. The Swamp deer group shows marked seasonal changes in response to breeding and food availability. The smallest groups (5-15) are formed during winter, followed by monsoon (10-25) and summer (10-50).  
 
 
  Diedt in the Wild:Barasingha is primarily a grazer and largely feed on grasses and aquatic plants. Some of the most utilized species were Sacharum spp. Imperata cylindrical, Narenga pophyrocoma, Phragmites karka, Oryza rufipogan, Hygroryza spp and Hydrilla spp.

  Threats:The habitat of swamp deer is threatened more due to flood plain grassland, changes in river dynamics due to human developmental activities. Large swampy area has been brought under the cultivation and thus exerted peripheral pressure on the swamps. Poaching is also a common phenomenon.
